About the Piece:
There are enormous star nurseries are tucked away in a far away nebula that’s most likely destroyed and gone already. There’s something magical yet ghostly and ominous about the Pillars of Creation. @nasa beautifully describes them as towering tendrils of cosmic dust and gas that sit in the heart of M16, or the Eagle Nebula. As vast as they are vibrant, these pillars “float” tall and look as if in constant motion (because they are!). The Eagle Nebula is about 7,000 light years away, and only a teeny-tiny portion of this can be compared to our solar system (meaning that these pillars are pretty dang big!) •
I initially set out to create a diagram of the pillars, but instead, I wanted to show how cosmic material collectively move and swirl together, creating beautiful gradients of color that will ultimately be sucked into the intense gravitational force of a newborn star. •
The baby stars are pictured as the most vibrant yellow color surrounded by dark, dense looking colors like dark purple, which represent evaporating gaseous globules, or EGGs. These are the incubators of new stars. The blue colors in the image represent oxygen, red/orange is sulfur, and green represents both nitrogen and hydrogen. The pillars are bathed in the scorching ultraviolet light from a cluster of young stars located just outside the frame. The winds from these stars are slowly eroding the towers of gas and dust. As magnificent as these pillars are, they’ll soon disappear when a star is born.
